An organization I’ve never heard of sends a note to me today which reads, in part:
L’Association X pour la promotion de l’Humanisme et de la Paix durable au sein de la Francophonie/Philie Internationale a réellement besoin de VOTRE SOUTIEN afin de poursuivre sa mission, soit celle de SOUTENIR “NOS AINES” et les personnes en difficulté. [CAPITALS in the original.]
I don’t parle français, so for help I turn to Babel Fish, the on-line translation Web site. It translates my email into English in a flash:
The Association X for the promotion of Humanism and lasting Peace within the International Francophonie needs really YOUR SUPPORT in order to continue its mission, that is to say that TO SUPPORT “OUR GROINS” and the people in difficulty.
Babel Fish never fails to brighten my day. I don’t know what my correspondent intended, but supporting “our groins” seems like quite a comedown from lofty “humanism” and “peace,” even if we toss in “the people in difficulty.” Unless, of course, they’re in difficulty because of their groins.
